Race Driver: Grid is a 2008 racing video game developed and published by Codemasters for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Nintendo DS, arcade, Java ME and OS X. It is the first game in the Grid series.[5][6]

Grid was developed and published by Codemasters, the creators of the TOCA series. It is a game in which the player runs their own race team, acting as the primary driver. As players progress they gain sponsors and can hire a teammate to drive alongside them in certain events.

A mobile version published by Glu Mobile was released in April 2008.[11][12] A demo was released on the PlayStation Store, Xbox Live Marketplace and for Microsoft Windows in May 2008.[13] The demo allowed players to try two game modes: racing and drifting. The demo also featured a competition challenge, with a BMW 3 series, as a prize, for European-based gamers,[14] and a Ford Mustang for U.S.-based players.[15] The American competition ended at midnight on 25 May, whereas the European competition ended on 31 May, also at midnight. The demo also had two competition tracks available online, and allowed up to 12 players to compete online. The demo has been downloaded by over one million people over three platforms.[16][17]

Codemasters released two downloadable content (DLC) packs; the first of the two was released on 4 December 2008, the 8-Ball Pack on the Xbox Live Marketplace and the PlayStation Network. The pack contained eight new cars and these include the McLaren F1 GTR, TVR Cerbera Speed 12, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X, Honda S2000, Nissan GT-R (S-G2008), Volkswagen Nardo, Pontiac Firebird and the Volvo C30. The 8-Ball Pack also came complete with two new multiplayer events set on existing circuits from across Grid's three continents. The second DLC pack dubbed the Prestige Pack was released in March 4, 2010 (for the PlayStation 3 only). The pack added Mount Panorama Circuit and ten cars, including the Ferrari F430 GTC, Bugatti Veyron and Ferrari F575 GTC.[citation needed]

Edge ranked the game #41 on its list of "The 100 Best Games To Play Today", stating that "it blows cobwebs from the genre, with handling a great balance of sim twitchiness and arcade abandon, breathtaking speed, and a sense of being there like no other racer".[47]

North American publication Nintendo Power gave the game a score of 8.5 out of 10. The review heaped praise on the game's robust car and course customization features, superb graphics, and multiplayer modes.[8] N-Europe gave the game an 8 out of 10.[48] IGN awarded Grid with its DS: Best Racing Game 2008 award.[49]

Race Driver GRID is a popular game developed by Codemaster, Firebrand Games, and Spiced Bits and published under the banner of Codemasters, Glu Mobile, Sega, and Feral Interactive. This game was released on 30th May 2008, and since then, it has become quite popular.

Race Driver: GRID was released on May 30 2008 in Europe, June 3 2008 in North America, and in Australia on June 12 2008, available for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, as well as Windows using Securom for DRM. The Mac OS X version, published by Feral Interactive, would be released on March 28th 2013 including all of its downloadable content.[3]

The game includes Flashback, an instant replay feature. From an in-race replay players can rewind to a desired previous moment and resume the race from there. Flashbacks are limited, becoming fewer the higher the difficulty level selected, and in Grid World there is a cash bonus for not using them.

On May 8th, 2008, a demo was released on the PlayStation Store and Xbox Live Marketplace, with a PC version coming on the following day. It has been downloaded by over one million people on the three platforms available.

The demo lets players try two game modes: racing and drifting. It also featured a challenge to win a BMW 3 series for European-based gamers and a chance to win a Ford Mustang for U.S. based players. The competitions for Europeans ended on May 31 at midnight, BST, and for U.S. gamers on May 25, 2008 midnight, ET.

A Nintendo DS adaptation was made by Firebrand Games, the developers of Race Driver: Create and Race, and made available on August 05, 2008. The game runs on the Octane engine, incorporating its 3D racing graphics, user interface and track editor.

An Arcade adaptation was published by Sega in 2010. Based on the main iteration of the game, it has two singleplayer modes, quick race and championship, and also offers multiplayer races if multiple cabinets are linked together.

North American publication Nintendo Power gave the Nintendo DS version a score of 8.5 out of 10. Praise was delivered to the game's robust car and course customization features, superb graphics by DS standards, and praised the multiplayer modes. Some mild criticism was delivered towards the game's single player mode for having flimsy car upgrading and lack of knowing what rewards you get before entering a race, but said that the good aspects far outweigh the bad.

As mentioned before, players will begin racing right away without any practice runs. The absence of a tutorial may appear to represent a narrow learning curve, but be assured that there most definitely is one. While the slope of such a curve will be dependent upon prior experience with other racing games, those who are either new to the genre or simply do not play driving games very often should find their way after a few short races.

When you're ready to race, players have the choice of entering the game's career mode, called GRID World, or selecting Race Day that allows players to customize the racing experience by choosing the venue, track, car, number of laps, and race type. These two options are accompanied by Multiplayer which can be plaed via LAN or the internet. In the single player campaign, or career mode, GRID World starts players as a newcomer to the racing scene. With only a few cars at your disposal, the goal is to collect enough prize money to begin your own racing team. From there, players will begin to acquire more cars with their winnings. In addition, sponsorships will become available as your reputation improves throughout the circuit. While going fast and finishing first is definitely on the agenda, finishing in second, third, and even fifth place in some events still puts cash in your pocket.

GRID features a number of different events that will have players testing their endurance skills, speed in time trials, and even drifting. Along with these various event types are a number of lavish venues to race though. Players will take part in events scattered throughout various regions of the US, Europe, and Japan. The location will typically coincide with the type of racing event. For instance, drivers will participate in muscle car racing in Detroit, grand prix events in Milan, and drifting challenges in Yokohama Japan. There are numerous venues to experience during the course of the game, each of which is rendered beautifully and plays a major role in the overall satisfaction of the game.

Many gamers have come to expect the ability to customize their vehicles in racing games. However, GRID allows only cosmetic customization in which players will choose their team colors that will be applied to the body and trim of all of their cars. Thankfully, the ability to update these colors exists to keep players from growing weary of the seafoam green they may have chosen. While it may have taken some guts on behalf of the development team to exclude such a feature as vehicle customization, Codemasters has made the game's direction clear in their tagline, "It's all about the race." Even so, cars will not be completely void of bling as sponsors will place decals on your cars as you take them on.

The racing in GRID is absolutely top-notch. Every car feels and handles differently. For instance, the Lamborghini takes corners very efficiently with minimal break application, while the Aston Martin requires just the right combination of break and hand break to handle a track's twists and turns. We likely aren't qualified to judge the physics behind the cars, but they tend to do a good job at mimicking the feel of driving a race car. The game doesn't offer up the realism found in some of the hardcore racing sims, but it definitely has more realism than others in the genre like the Need for Speed series. Whether that's good or bad will depend on what you're after, but we found the overall feel to be quite enjoyable even if it may not appease the gearheads of the world.
